Opening Rinker Campus to In-Person Instruction – Rinker Plan

This post was updated on

Note: For information specific to Crean College, please refer to Opening Rinker Campus to In-Person Instruction – Crean College Plan.

October 5, 2020 marks another step forward to open Rinker Health Science campus for in-person instruction. The opening will not mean a return to campus life as it was fall 2019. We remain in the midst of a global pandemic; we must remain vigilant and practice physical distancing, wear PPE, wash/disinfect hands, and limit the number of faculty, staff, and students on-campus and within any enclosed space. We continue to update our protocols using the most current information on the best ways to mitigate COVID-19. You will find changes in some of our current protocols based on the most up-to-date best practices.

Faculty, staff, and students must complete the following steps to be approved to be on campus. If you have not completed these steps and intend to be on campus, please begin today.

  1. Complete the COVID-19 training modules. You can access these canvas.chapman.edu.
  2. Complete a COVID-19 test. This test is free-of-charge and must be ordered through wellconnectplus.com.
  3. Complete a daily COVID-19 health screening. You will be automatically enrolled once both “1 and 2” above are completed.
  4. Students only – you must have health insurance and you must be immunized. Submit proof of immunization here. If you do not have insurance, you will be billed for CU health insurance. If you have insurance, submit proof here.

Personal Protective Gear:

Face masks here refer to a face mask/covering that covers the nose and mouth.

Face masks are required in all indoor and outdoor areas of the Rinker Campus unless a lab or classroom requires more extensive PPE. Face masks may be removed when eating and drinking. When people are within 6 feet of each other, a face shield and mask must be worn. This applies to all areas of the Rinker Campus, outdoors, indoors in labs, classrooms or other gathering spaces.

Face masks and face shields are provided free of charge. CUSP students, faculty, and staff obtain face masks and shields by contacting the door entry monitors during regular business hours. The Dean’s office Assistants in 9401 and the Core Lab manager’s office in 9501 can also provide PPE to Rinker personnel and visitors. Crean students, faculty and staff obtain face masks and shields from their department.

Refer to campus return guidelines for characteristics of effective face coverings, and instructions for putting on and taking off face coverings.

Identification:

Student, faculty, and staff identification cards are always to be visible.

Physical Distancing:

Maintaining 6 feet between you and others is required unless research and instructional labs establish safety protocols for working near others. Whenever people are closer than 6 feet, they should also be using a face shield. Six-foot intervals are identified by a Peter the Panther paw. Refer to campus return guidelines.

Hand Washing/Disinfecting:

Refer to campus return guidelines for hand washing and disinfecting guidelines.

Meetings, Events, Advising, Gatherings:

Rinker Campus is open only for teaching and research. Advising, club meetings and activities, departmental and college meetings, events will remain online.

Campus, Building, and Room Access:

Campus

Research and vivarium faculty, staff, and students are likely to be on campus throughout the week and weekend at any time between 7am and 11pm. These personnel are authorized through individual lab specific plans and their access, PPE requirements and other safety measures are monitored by the Principal Investigator of that lab.

Crean College faculty, staff and students are on campus Monday morning until noon, all day Wednesdays and Fridays, and weekends. Campus access on weekends is limited to those teaching or taking classes and labs or to faculty-directed remediation, review, and practice. Crean college should not be on campus Monday after 12:30pm, and all day Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Pharmacy faculty, staff, and students are on campus Monday after 12pm, all day Tuesdays and Thursdays, and weekends. Campus access on weekends is limited to those teaching or taking classes and labs or to faculty-directed remediation, review, and practice. CUSP should not be on campus Monday before noon and all-day Wednesdays and Fridays, except for the graduate students, staff, and faculty in the CUSP Research Facility mentioned above.

Buildings

Faculty and staff will have card key access to 9401 and/or 9501 as determined by the appropriate dean and approved by the Provost (faculty) or VP HR (staff). Graduate students at CUSP will have card access to 9501 external doors and to the Research Facility if the access to the Facility is required for the student’s rotation, research, thesis, or dissertation courses. Graduate health professional programs (i.e. PharmD, PA, students in CUSP and Crean) will not have card key access to 9401 and 9501 external doors and to internal doors in both buildings.

9401 Jeronimo entry doors will automatically unlock Monday through Friday at 7:30am and lock at 5:30pm. During “open door” times, faculty, staff and students will scan the Q-code and the building receptionist will confirm admission to the building by checking the “Clear COVID Daily Health Screen”. During “locked door” times, only faculty and staff with key card access will enter the building and will scan the Q-code.

9401 Jeronimo exits will be any side door. Prior to exiting 9401, faculty, staff, and students will scan the Q-code.

9501 Jeronimo entry doors will remain locked 24/7 and will require key card access or access as part of a class cohort. All faculty, staff, and students in Crean and Pharmacy will enter the building through the front, main doors (excluding anatomy students who will enter the building through the wet-dry lab external doors). Faculty and staff will scan the Q-code and card key to enter 9501. They may be required to show the “Clear COVID Daily Health Screen”. Students will enter with their class cohort, show the “Clear COVID Daily Health Screen” to the appropriate staff and/or faculty.

9501 Jeronimo exits will be any side door. Prior to exiting 9501, faculty, staff, and students will scan the Q-code. Anatomy lab students will exit directly from the anatomy lab.

Classrooms, Teaching Labs, Staff/Faculty Lounge, Conference Rooms, Study Rooms, Vivarium

9401 main entrances to the atrium and Health Science Library will automatically unlock Monday through Friday 7:30am to 5:30pm; otherwise, doors will be locked and accessible only to faculty and staff with card key access.

9401 classrooms, conference rooms, study rooms, and staff/faculty lounge are locked. Only approved faculty and staff will have card key access to classrooms and conference rooms. Staff/faculty lounge and study rooms are locked.

9401 Vivarium requires card key access. Access is approved by the Dean of Pharmacy.

9501 teaching labs, classroom, conference rooms, and research suites will be locked and accessible only by card key to those approved by the VP for Research, Dean of Pharmacy, Dean of Crean College, or Provost.

Student Spaces

Studying and Eating

Some students will need to be on campus for full days. Their schedules may include a mix of in-person and online lectures and labs or time gaps between one or more in-person classes. These students will need a place to study and eat.

Designated areas include the outdoor tented area between 9401 Jeronimo and the Alton building, 9401 atrium, and selected carrels and tables in the Health Science Library. These areas are open 7:30am to 5:30pm and available to Pharmacy students Monday (noon to 5:30) and Tuesday and Thursday all day and Crean students Monday (7:30am to noon) and Wednesday and Friday all day. These areas are not open for use on the weekends, before 7:30am or after 5:30pm Monday through Friday.

In the designated study and eating areas students are expected to practice physical distancing and to wear PPE except when eating. Students are expected to wipe down the table and chair surfaces before and after use with available disinfectant spray and wipes.

Microwaves, Refrigerators, and Water Dispensers

Students will not have access to the water dispensers, microwaves and refrigerators. Students are encouraged to bring bottled water and non-perishable meals and snacks.

Coffee service with limited snack selections are available from 7am to 2pm, Monday through Friday, in the 9501 “Grab-and-Go” service.

Prayer and Meditation

9501 Room 214 access is limited for a maximum of four people at a given time for prayer and meditation. Continuous wearing of a mask is required, and 6 feet distancing required during worship/meditation. There should be no sharing of the prayer rugs and prayer rugs must be stored in a separate plastic bag.

Lactation

The lactation room in 9401 is locked but will be made available to students who request card key access. Pharmacy students request access from Holly Wilson and Crean students from San White. The room is single occupancy only. Users should sanitize the chair, refrigerator door, and table surfaces before and after use.

Your efforts to practice behaviors shown to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 have been instrumental in opening Rinker to more people. With continued diligence, we are hoping to offer more in-person instruction spring trimester. With lack of diligence, we may be asked to return to a more restrictive environment at Rinker.
