What is Contact Tracing?

Contact tracing helps protect you, your family and your community and slows the spread of COVID-19.

  • Letting people know they may have been exposed to COVID-19 and should monitor their health for signs and symptoms of COVID-19.
  • Helping people who may have been exposed to COVID-19 get tested.
  • Asking people to self-isolate if they have COVID-19 or self-quarantine if they are a CloseContact.

How Contact Tracing Works

  1. Contact tracing starts when:
    • You have tested positive for COVID-19, or
    • You have been identified as a Close Contact of someone who has tested positive, or
    • You answered “yes” to any of the questions on the Daily Health Screening.
  2. A contact tracing team will contact you to open an investigation. Please be sure to respond to phone calls as quickly as you are able so that the process is not delayed. 
  3. During the investigation, the contact tracing team will collect information on your vaccination status, site of likely exposure and other information vital to mitigating further spread of the virus. 
  4. The contact tracing team will also provide you with instructions about the need to be tested, whether you should isolate or quarantine, important contact information and the next steps for you to take. The exact information provided will depend on your unique circumstances and needs. 

Close Contact is defined as: 

  • Someone who was within 6 feet of an infected person;
  • for a total of 15 minutes or more; 
  • over a 24-hour period (for example, three individual 5-minute exposures for a total of 15 minutes).

If you meet the criteria above,  please answer “yes” on your daily health screening.  Instructions are given there for vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. Our contact tracing Team will follow up as necessary, primarily with those that are not vaccinated, for any instructions and guidance on quarantining. The initial contact will be made by phone whenever possible.

Please note that a person is still considered a Close Contact even if one or both people wore a mask when they were together.

If you believe you have been in Close Contact with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 and you have not been contacted by our Contact Tracing team or not participating in the Daily Health Screening if not accessing campus, please contact contactracingteam@chapman.edu


Potential Low Exposure Notice

A potential low exposure notice means that a case has been identified in a communal setting (i.e. classrooms, gyms and community areas). 

The CUSB dashboard lists every building on campus where a potential exposure occurred, and the date and time of that potential exposure. 

If you were present in one of these locations at the time indicated, you are not considered a Close Contact and you are not required to quarantine

The risk of developing COVID-19 from this exposure is low, however, you should monitor yourself for symptoms of infection for 14 days from this exposure. Signs and symptoms may include: fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, fatigue, congestion, headaches, and body aches. If you start to experience any of these symptoms you should stay home and follow up with the Student Health Center for testing.

Potential Exposure Notice for Chapman Employees

In accordance with state law, employees of the university can access this AB685 notification letter and a list of locations on campus. The CUSB dashboard lists every building on campus where a potential exposure occurred, and the date and time of that potential exposure.  If you were present in one of these locations at the time indicated, you are not considered a Close Contact and you are not required to quarantine.  

Staff required to be onsite will continue to be required to be onsite even after such a notification unless they experience COVID-like symptoms or have been identified as a Close Contact as defined above.  These signs and symptoms are listed above under “Potential Low Exposure Notice”.


Contact Tracing Services

Chapman has augmented our internal contract tracing staff with additional external support. Rapid-Trace, a leader in contact tracing with specific expertise in working with higher education institutions, will work under the supervision of Student Health Services. 

In the event a person within the Chapman community has a confirmed case of COVID-19, Rapid-Trace will identify and inform those who may have been exposed so they can receive necessary care and Chapman can take the necessary steps to prevent further spread. It is crucial that everyone in our community answer communications from Student Health Services and Rapid-Trace as soon as possible in order for the contract-tracing process to be as effective as possible. 

All contact-tracing professionals observe strict protocol regarding confidentiality and data security.
